Mechanical Drawings on Fabric, Yep Amazing

Mechanical Drawings on Fabric, yep amazing. I got my CAD Degree in 1999 at MiraCosta College, Oceanside,CA. My Professor was full time Head of the Dept Mr. Ted Handsink. He taught design and drafting for over 25 years there. He must of have been in his 70's at that time. He had wonderful stories about designs and manufacturing. He also had a full time Assistant, a women that Red Lined all our Drawings, she was strict! Thank goodness.

Mr Handsink had worked at many Fortune 500 companies included GE, Boeing and NASA. He owned a Blueprint Company, at that time, in Oceanside,CA.

He would tell us stories about making full size, 1:1 drawings on cotton fabric at Boeing in Long Beach,CA. They were then rolled up for storage. When prototype parts were made, they would lay them over the fabric drawings for 1st article inspections. Sometimes if mistakes were found, they would add a patch and sew over the incorrect area then redraw it.

Of the 50 or 60 students that entered the program, myself and about 8 others were the only students to complete the program and get our degrees.

Mr. Hansink's two sons were ProE Consultants at that time. He mentored me, and encouraged me to be a CAD Consultant. Thanks to his excellent advice and teaching, that dream came true for me.

Mr. Handsink retired the year I graduated. He moved to Colorado and built his dream house. I lost contact with him, but I'll always remember him as one of my favorite teachers.

Thanks to Develop3D for posting this photo on twitter.

Cheers!

My views about PDM/PLM and Onshape

As a Certified SolidWorks Enterprise PDM Administrator, I feel that Onshape has this important advantage regarding PDM/PLM. There is only one database (Onshape Document) of a design, period. That simplifies the requirement that one has to demonstrate and prove that non-authorized changes can't be made to the original Document and that copies can't be made. Onshape requires that the owner of the Document has to grant permissions for others to edit/Revise the Document out of the box and this is easily proven. Also Onshape automatically Saves all changes/Edits to the Document as shown in the History Tree, again this can be proven.

So, many of the important requirements for PDM/PLM are already in place when using Onshape by Default, nice! I predict that a proper, and even simple Onshape PDM/PLM workflow will be available soon.

Any comments?

Teaching Advanced CAD At Palomar College

I really enjoy teaching at Palomar College San Marcos, CA. I teach Basic and then Advance SolidWorks each school year. So I get to spend the majority of a whole year with my students, watching them advance their skills tremendously. When the "light bulb" in their head goes off and they really get 3D CAD, man that is so cool! Students have great ideas and energy!

They put in a lot of hard work. But I like to make it fun too. So sometimes I send out a Class Agenda like this:

From Devon Sowell Agenda 03-26-2015

Hello CAD Power Users-

Great class meeting last Tuesday, everyone is improving their CAD skills and SolidWorks Super Duper Powers faster than I can teach it, which is good!

I have more Drawings to hand out for the 2 Ton Press Project. The Foot Drawing is 12 sheets, sorry, sorta.

Attention all inhabitants of CAD Planet:

At 6:45pm tonight there will be a Design Review Meeting of the 2 Ton Press Project. The party of the first party will ask for suggestions to improve the design of the Table on the 2 Ton Press thingamabob. All suggestions will be resented. The results will be a Change Order handed down from up above called Revision 37 ad nauseam.

Next we will enter the Worm Hole called "Surfacing" We may not survive, but the Spline Overlord may provide a Configuration that will protect us.

Finally we'll end the class by adding 27 Layers to an AutoCAD drawing and naming each Layer after a character from the DC or Marvel Universe, your choice.

Cheers,

Using Cloud based software that runs in a browser? That's old hat around here.

When you visit your Doctor's office do you see this?

.

Or perhaps this?

.

If so, you might considering changing to a different Doctor, one who's office is using up to date technology.

.

My Wife is a  Doctor of psychology specializing in neuropsychological testing. She puts your brain on the dynamometer, so to speak, and can quantify the function and performance of your brain. And yet she still married me, amazing!

When the Affordable Care Act, Obama Care, was signed into law on March 23, 2010 one of the mandates issued was for all medical records, histories, and provider billings to be submitted and stored electronically. This is overseen by the Center for Medicare Services, (CMS).  By the way, my Wife abhors using a computer.

So in 2012 thru 2013 I went back to our local Community College. I got certified in Medical Billing & Coding and Medical Insurance Practices. To say I was the oldest person in these classes is an understatement LOL.

After 25 years of my Wife writing everything out in long hand, I began the process of switching her practice over to electronic documents. We needed medical practice software, so we began to research what other doctors were using in their offices. The winner was Office Ally, a Cloud based application that runs in a browser. Sound familiar? Office Ally claims 340,000 users currently. I've been using it since April 2, 2014.

.

This software has streamlined our workflow and improved our cash flow, I highly recommend it. Looking back, I remember it being offline for more than an hour just one time. Just like Onshape, if it happens to crash, which it rarely does, I just restart my browser and continue on where I left off. Again, like Onshape, it keeps copies of all our documents and they are easily retrieved using their excellent Search functionality.

Yeah, I'm a veteran using a web based application running in a browser. And I'm a happy camper too.

Any feedback?

Welcome to my new blog

Hello World!

My name is Devon Sowell and I've been a CAD Consultant for more than 15 years. I like to design products and optimize ideas for cost effective manufacturing. Previously I used SolidWorks, but now I would describe myself as an Onshape champion. I'm an Onshape Consulting Partner and my new website, Carlsbad CAD, is here www.carlsbadcad.com .

I highly recommend you take a close look at Onshape, www.onshape.com . I would describe Onshape CAD as the next generation in CAD. It is a browser based application that can run on Apple, Windows and Android devices. No software needs to be downloaded, it runs on hosted servers. No expensive approved CAD video card is required. Onshape is currently "in beta", so it's not fully baked yet, but performs very well in it's current state.

I'll be posting about Onshape CAD and other interesting related topics. I look forward to interacting with other Onshape users.

Cheers,
Devon Sowell

P.S. For example multiple Parts, and auto Color, from a single Sketch using Onshape, nice!
