Autodesk Fusion 360, my "go to" CAD tool these days

As many others have mentioned, "CAD in the Cloud" is revolutionizing the CAD business. The most obvious two examples are Onshape, started by the ex SOLIDWORKS Dream Team, and Autodesk Fusion 360 brought to life by the charismatic Autodesk CEO Carl Bass.

Onshape likes to brag that they are the only "Full Cloud CAD application" but I find this claim irrelevant. Yes Fusion 360 currently requires a small file download to each machine, but so what. It loads fast and updates automatically. More importantly, for example uploading very large CAD assemblies and creating CAD Drawings, Fusion 360 is faster than Onshape in my office.

The above mentioned argument is about to disappear anyway. Autodesk has a Beta project called Project Leopard, what is it? Full Cloud based Fusion 360. I know the approximate date it is scheduled to go live, but I've been asked not to reveal it, so I won't.

My number one "like" about Fusion 360 is the User Interface, I give it a grade of A-. It's intuitive to me. I was able to teach myself how to use 90% of the Features quickly and the helpful team at Autodesk answered all my email questions very quickly and cheerfully regarding the remaining 10%. Onshape, on the other hand, is not intuitive to me at all. I give it a D- grade. I hunt and peck when using it and their support is clunky and lacking.

Onshape "feels" like a Beta software, and when I inquire about "when" some of these problems will be corrected, I'm usually told "to wait". Well I've been waiting a long time. Some Onshape employees can be defensive at the drop of a hat. Why? Fusion 360 employees seem helpful and confident to me.

Finally, look at the screenshot above please. The value of Fusion 360 is unbeatable.

Exciting New Project with Dan Hanebrink, A Racing Electric Motorcycle!

When I called the telephone number for the company looking for CAD Consulting, I had no idea that I would be asked to join the very famous & successful motorcycle icon Dan Hanebrink! An added bonus is that his home based machine shop is just 10 minutes away from our Big Bear Lake vacation home.

Back in 1973 Mr. Hanebrink built by hand, and raced this outrageous road racer you see below.

The chassis is a Monocoque magnesium structure with a 3 cylinder 2 stroke Kholer snowmobile engine with 700cc displacement. Also hand built and designed by Dan is the CVT transmission that transmits power to the the rear 16" diameter rear wheel. The front wheel is 16" too.

I will be using Fusion 360 for this project.

I've already spent one day with Mr. Hanebrink and I was blown away by his intelligence and machining skills.

So he'll be building 5-8 copies of the Hustler X5 Junior Road Race bike shown at the top and I get to help, cool.
